GROUPTHINK, MEGA CHURCHES,
AND CATASTROPHE

The psychological term "groupthink" refers to a phenomenon observed in situations when the core leadership of a group fails to see its situation clearly, and as a result continues down a path that leads ultimately to failure, often on a grand scale. In common parlance, "groupthink" can also refer to the non-leader members of a group, who also take part in a kind of group-mind or mob mentality. This panel will look at the eight "symptoms" of groupthink -- illusions of invulnerability, unquestioned belief, rationalizing warnings, stereotyping opponents, self-censorship, illusions of unanimity, direct pressure, and so-called "mindguards" who protect the group from outside ideas -- and ask its panelists if they saw evidence of these symptoms during their time at Mars Hill Church in Seattle.
